Attention deficit disorder is a disorder that is not easily identifiable in children or adults. There are many factors that go into making a diagnosis because the symptoms can often be attributed to other disorders as well. ADD/ADHD is characterized by hyperactivity, inattentiveness, impulsiveness and many other similar symptoms. Just because someone isn’t diagnosed as a child, does not mean that they do not have the disorder as it is just as much of an adult disorder as it is a children’s disorder. The symptoms of ADD can lead to many academic, social and work problems if left untreated. There are two types of treatment that can be used to treat ADD, Psychotherapy and medications like stimulants. Often times a combination of the treatments are used so the patient can learn the skills needed to function on their own while using medication.
